Linking preprints to published papers - how good are your metadata? (spoiler: not that good)

How many COVID19 preprints get published? And can we tell by looking at their metadata?

Crossref notifies preprint servers of potential matches with published articles. It requires preprint servers to verify the links and add them to the metadata record of the preprint, but uptake of this varies across preprint services.

Using a collection of COVID-19 related preprints from over 15 different preprint servers (itself collected through Crossref), we look at how many of these have links to published journal articles. We compare this to information on preprint servers themselves. We also look at differences between preprints servers (regional, disciplinary, publisher-linked) in percentage of preprints linked to journal articles, time-to-publication, and the 'destination' of preprints.

The results are as much a reflection on the uptake of metadata linking as on the actual rate of preprints that get published as journal articles. As such, they are a call to action to publishers and preprint servers to include these links in their metadata and thereby help improve the scholarly record.
